Gicumbi District Launches Child Protection and Nutrition Awareness Week

In a joint effort to promote child rights, improve maternal and child nutrition, and enhance community awareness on child welfare, Gicumbi District has officially launched a Week of Action on Child Protection and Nutrition.

The campaign, running from June 17 to 21, 2025, is organized in collaboration with the National Child Development Agency (NCDA) and international partners including SOS Children’s Villages Rwanda, AVSI Rwanda, and Humanity & Inclusion.

The district-level launch took place in Rukomo Sector, attended by a diverse delegation of stakeholders. These included the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Mr. Jean Marie Vianney MBONYINTWARI and enthusiastic local residents.

Speaking at the launch event, Vice Mayor MBONYINTWARI emphasized the importance of a holistic, community-led approach to child protection. “Protecting children is not just a government duty—it’s a shared responsibility. When we invest in the health, safety, and education of our children, we’re investing in the future of our nation,” he said.

Throughout the week, residents will benefit from a series of community sessions and educational talks focusing on:

  • Balanced nutrition for children, adolescents, and pregnant mothers;

  • The ‘First 1,000 Days’ approach to maternal and child health;

  • Prevention of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation;

  • Combating alcohol abuse, drug use, and domestic violence;

  • Promoting hygiene and sanitation in households and communities.

To demonstrate practical implementation, children were served a balanced, hygienically-prepared meal following the education sessions—symbolizing the link between knowledge and action. Health and nutrition experts also engaged mothers and caregivers on preparing nutritious meals using locally available foods.

Representatives from NCDA and SOS Rwanda reiterated their commitment to scaling up child protection interventions through community-based initiatives, especially in rural areas where vulnerabilities are more pronounced.

This campaign comes as Rwanda continues to implement its National Child Development Policy and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

The Gicumbi initiative reflects the country's broader ambition to eliminate malnutrition, promote inclusive education, and build child-friendly systems through local leadership and global partnerships.
