Honouring Memory, Strengthening Unity: TTC de la Salle Commemorates Victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi
As part of the 31st commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi (#Kwibuka31), students, teachers, and local officials gathered on the 2nd May, 2025 at TTC de la Salle in Gicumbi District to honour the memory of teachers and students from GS de la Salle who were brutally killed during the genocide.
The day began with a solemn procession to the Rutare Genocide Memorial, where wreaths were laid in tribute to the victims. A moment of silence was observed, and prayers were offered in remembrance of the lives lost.
The ceremony was graced by the presence of Parfaite Uwera, Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Development in Gicumbi District, who served as the guest of honour. In her remarks, Madame Uwera delivered a heartfelt message of comfort to survivors and families of the victims. She emphasized the importance of remembrance, noting that "we honour those we lost by safeguarding the unity they were denied and by ensuring that genocide never finds root in our land again."
Madam Uwera Parfaite, VM/FED addressing her remark to young generation convened at TTC de la Salle.
Addressing the young generation present, she urged them to be protectors of truth, unity, and reconciliation. “As Rwandans, we have a responsibility to resist divisionism in all its forms, to uphold the truth of our history, and to build a nation where every life is valued,” she said.
TTC de la Salle leadership also reaffirmed their commitment to educating youth who are not only academically excellent but also morally grounded and socially responsible. Attendees included genocide survivors, students, religious leaders, local officials, and members of the community.
The ceremony concluded with testimony from survivors and a call to action: that remembrance is not a one-day event, but a continuous process of building a resilient and inclusive society.
