Rebero Suspension Bridge Inaugurated: A Lifeline Connecting Communities in Gicumbi
The community of Rebero in Ruvune Sector was filled with excitement and pride as District leaders, representatives from Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), and local residents gathered to celebrate the official inauguration of the Rebero Suspension Bridge, a project that now connects hundreds of residents to essential services and opportunities.
The inauguration ceremony was marked by vibrant traditional dances, speeches, and heartfelt expressions of gratitude from the community. The new bridge, built through a partnership between Gicumbi District and Bridges to Prosperity, is expected to transform daily life in this hilly region by making access to schools, health centers, and markets safer and easier.
“This bridge belongs to you, the people of Rebero,” said Gicumbi District Mayor, Nzabonimpa Emmanuel, in his closing remarks. “Let’s protect it, use it responsibly, and let it drive development for generations to come. It stands as a symbol of unity, safety, and shared progress.”
Before the bridge was constructed, residents of Rebero often faced difficulties crossing the river, especially during the rainy season. For many families, the journey to access social services or sell goods was both long and risky.
One resident, a mother from Ruvune, shared how the new bridge is going to change lives: “Before, the river would overflow and children couldn’t reach school. Today, we shall walk safely. This bridge brings us peace and hope.”
Representing Bridges to Prosperity (B2P), one of the organization’s team leaders emphasized the broader vision behind the project:
“Every bridge we build is a connection not just between two sides of a river, but between people and possibilities. We are proud to partner with Gicumbi District to ensure no community is left behind.”
As part of the handover, Bridges to Prosperity representatives and District officials presented bridge maintenance manuals and certificates to the local bridge committee, a key step to ensuring the infrastructure’s long-term sustainability.
The event concluded with cultural performances, traditional songs, and dances that celebrated partnership, resilience, and community pride. Residents expressed their appreciation to both the District and Bridges to Prosperity for bringing long-awaited safety and connectivity to their area.
The Rebero Suspension Bridge now stands as a beacon of collaboration and progress a bridge that not only connects two communities but also strengthens the bonds of unity and development across Gicumbi District.
